Virginia's Tint Law covers the use of colored and reflective window tint. Red, amber, and yellow tints are not permitted while the others are legal. It is also important to remember that there are medical exemptions to tint. The following are some typical violations of the law.
Medical exemption
If you're not able to follow the tinting laws in Virginia You may be qualified for an exemption for medical reasons. A letter from your doctor declaring that you have an medical reason for tinting your windows is required to obtain this specific authorization. The letter should be signed by your doctor and should include your name, birth date and the specific reason for tinting your windows. You must carry the letter on your person while driving and present it to a police officer when questioned.
The state requires drivers with certain medical conditions to have tinted windows, for example tinting to reduce glare from the sun. Virginia law permits tinting all the way to the windshield. The tint should not be darker than the AS-1 line that runs along the back of the vehicle. Likewise, back side windows and the rear windows can be tinted up to 35% darkness. The medical exemption for window tinting is a great idea if you're worried about the effects of the sun's glare on your vision.
Visible Light Transmission percentage
Virginia Tint Law restricts the amount of tint you can apply to your vehicle. The Visible Light Transmission percent (or VLT) is the determining factor. In Virginia the higher VLT means that more light can be able to pass through. It is legal to tint windows, even the lower VLT permits for more light to pass through. Multi-passenger vehicles also have different laws.
Before applying a tint to your windows, make sure the film that you're using has been approved by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Then, submit a certified application form signed by an authorized medical professional. The form should be submitted along with your application to the DMV. After your application has been approved, you will receive a registration card. This card serves as legal proof that the tint was installed for medical purposes.
Tints with different shades
You can save hundreds of dollars by cutting down the tint on your car's windows and the windshield. If you're concerned about legality issues, reflective windows can be an alternative. Installing reflective windows could be a violation of Virginia's tint laws. The law on tint in Virginia contains clauses that limit the amount of reflective glass you can have. For instance, windows must not be more than 20% reflective on the side facing the front and back.

Penalties for violating the law
Virginia window tint laws were adopted in 1999 and regulate the use of reflective and dark window tints on cars. Regular passenger cars can only have a tint that lets more than 50 percent of sunlight to enter. Other cars may not have window tinting restrictions.
In Virginia the red, yellow, and amber tints aren't legal for window tints for cars. In addition, the tint film makers are not required to verify the tint film used to make these films. When applying sun-shading and tinting cars, motorists require a medical permit. If they do not comply with the law, they will be penalized up to $110, and if they're found guilty of the offense and again, they could be sent to jail.
