10 Ways to Keep Trees Healthful

Trees are a valuable and hardworking part of our environment. They provide shade to our homes and neighborhoods, which reduces our energy consumption.

It's easy not to remember that trees require our attention in order for them to thrive. Tree health and growth are dependent on tree upkeep. With this in mind, we have some Kansas City tree care suggestions.

  • Choose the right tree. This is the key step that will ensure you enjoy years of enjoyment. The species you choose should be able to adapt to the environment and the light, soil, and space conditions of the location. For further information on the best tree species for your area, please visit your local nursery.

  • Takedown stakes as soon and as quickly as you can. If the tree is allowed to swing in the wind, its trunk will become stronger. To support the trunk of a new tree, you can use two stakes. One on each side is the root ball. The other has a flexible tie that can be tied loosely. As soon as the tree becomes able to stand alone, the stakes should be removed. This should not take more than a year.

  • Keep the grass under control. Grass growing in front of the trunk will compete for water, oxygen, and nutrients. Many young trees don't grow properly if the grass is allowed near the trunks. You can maximize your benefits by keeping the trunk and surrounding areas grass-free and mulched.

  • Water should be given in a controlled manner. Young trees require frequent watering. But even established trees need watering during droughts. You can water older trees up to 3 feet below the drip line. Let the soil dry slightly after watering. You can't depend on lawn sprinklers. They do not water well enough, so trees end up with shallow roots. A soil basin or drip watering is a better option.

  • Fertilize when necessary. Trees don't need to be fed all year. Although young trees may need fertilization to grow, they don't require it every year. However, older trees seldom require feeding. Do not feed trees whose growth is slow or their leaves are yellowing. A soil test can help determine which fertilizers you need.

  • Mulch. Mulch. Mulch protects the soil from moisture and heat loss, helps retain soil texture, and reduces the risk of weeds. You should replace the mulch on a weekly basis. Here are some mulching recommendations.

  • Pruning needs to be done correctly. Thinning cuts (removing complete branches at the source) rather than head cuts will increase the structure and strength. Large trees should be supervised by an arborist. Pruning properly and at the right times can make a big difference.

  • You must keep the roots safe. You should not allow vehicles or heavy machinery to drive on top of tree roots. They cause soil to shrink, which may reduce the amount oxygen available and could even kill roots.

  • Take care of the trunk. Trees are often damaged by lawnmowers and weed eaters whipping their trunks. This results in the bark and trunk becoming less strong and encourages insect and disease. You can protect young trees with plastic wraps from nurseries and gardening centres. If possible, make sure to create a 2-to-3 foot-wide mulched area around the tree.

  • Eliminate pests. You can kill or weaken trees with adult Japanese Beetles, Adelgids, or Caterpillars.
